How to Prepare for Math Contests: Tips from a State Champion
Hey there! It’s Amy, and today I want to share some insights from my journey as a math champion and my experiences with math competitions. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re already deep into your prep, I’ve got some tips that can help you succeed in these challenging contests.
1. Log Reoccurring Tricks
One of the most important things you can do is to keep track of the patterns and tricks you encounter in competitions, like the AMC. There are certain types of problems that appear repeatedly, and recognizing these can save you time and effort. For example, Pick’s Theorem is a handy tool for calculating areas of shapes on grids. Make a spreadsheet where you log these tricks along with the problem numbers and tests you found them on. This way, you can always refer back to them.
2. Reduce Careless Mistakes
Careless mistakes can cost you valuable points, so it’s crucial to practice under timed conditions. I found that using similar tests, like Canadian competitions, can help you get used to the pressure. After each test, review your mistakes to find easier solutions. This will help you improve over time.
3. Tackle Difficult Problems
Don’t shy away from problems that seem too hard for you. Challenging yourself with tough problems stretches your mind and reinforces foundational concepts. Interestingly, I found that I performed better on longer tests with harder questions because I had more time to think. Sometimes the hardest questions can be easier if you know just the right trick!
4. Limit Electronics
In today’s world, distractions from electronics can be overwhelming. I’m thankful I didn’t have social media during my high school years. It’s essential to minimize distractions, especially in the months leading up to your exam. Focused practice is key, and you need to train your brain to concentrate for extended periods, just like in a math Olympiad where you might have four to six hours to solve a handful of problems.
5. Keep Learning Math Tricks
The world of math is vast, and there are always new tricks to learn. Even if you feel confident in your current repertoire, make it a habit to discover new techniques. Check out the shorts on my channel for some quick tips and explore forums like the Art of Problem Solving for fresh ideas.
6. Consider a Math Tutor
Having a tutor can be incredibly beneficial. I worked with a private tutor who opened my eyes to the beauty of math and problem-solving. A good tutor can provide you with insights that you might not get in school. If tutoring isn’t an option for you, don’t worry! I’ll be sharing lessons from my tutor on this channel to help you improve your skills.
7. Practice Daily
Consistency is key. Just like physical exercise, your brain needs regular training. Aim to solve problems every day, gradually increasing the difficulty. Reflect on your practice sessions to identify areas for improvement. Always carry a practice test with you, and use any free time to work on problems. Every little bit helps!
Those are my top tips for preparing for math contests, whether that is the Caribou, Waterloo math competitions, or the AMC tests. I hope this advice helps you on your journey to becoming a mathlete. Let’s get to work and have fun with math!
